Finger Weaving Instructions

Materials:

  1. Six pieces of yarn for each student, each of length approximately 70 cm (28 inches).

  2. One pencil for each student.

  3. Scissors and tape.

Instructions:

We used yarn of six different colours to help in presenting the instructions and to aid the beginning weaver.

Begin by folding each length of yard in two.

step 1

Pass the folded end under the pencil and put the loose end through the loop.

step 2

Tighten the yarn around the pencil.

step 3

Repeat with the other 5 pieces of yarn and tape the pencil to a desk surface or table.

step 4

You now have 12 strands hanging from the pencil in pairs. Take the left strand in each pair and move it to the other side of the pencil.

step 5

Once half the strands have been moved to the other side of the pencil, tape them to the desk to keep them out of the way. They will be used later.

step 6

Now you are ready to start weaving.

You always start from the right. Take the rightmost strand and pass it over the strand beside it, under the next strand, over the fourth strand, under the fifth strand and over the sixth strand. The strand that started out on the right is now on the left. This procedure of taking the rightmost strand and passing it over, under, over, under, ... will be repeated many times.

step 7

Again, starting with the rightmost strand, in the image above the blue strand, weave across the other strands passing over the strand beside it, under the next strand and so on.

step 8

Every few rows pull the strands towards you to keep the weaving neat.

step 9

Continue this procedure of weaving the rightmost strand across the other strands.

step 10

When the unwoven strands are 4 to 5 centimeters (10 to 12 inches) in length you are ready to tie them off. This can be done by using an overhand knot with all 6 strands. You may want to double knot.

step 11

You are now ready to work on the other half of the sash. Take note of which way the sharpened end of the pencil is pointing, to the right or left. In the images above the sharpened end is pointing to the left. Remove the tape on the pencil and unwoven strands and flip the sash over so the unwoven strands are pointing toward you. Make sure the sharpened end of the pencil is pointing in the same direction it was previously and tape the woven strands to the desk.

step 12

Remove the pencil

step 13

and carefully undo the loops in the strands.

step 14

Continue to weave, starting with the rightmost strand, weaving across the other strands passing over the strand beside it, under the next strand and so on, as you did before.

When the unwoven strands are 4 to 5 centimeters (10 to 12 inches) in length, tie them off.

step 15

Trim the ends so that the fringe lengths are even.
