Outcome N6.6:

Demonstrate understanding of integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.

Indicators:
  1. Compare two integers and describe their relationship symbolically using <, >, or =.

Lesson Preparation

Equipment/materials:

Advanced Preparation:

  • Provide a copy of Jordin Tootoo's statistics to the students either on paper or on a display.
  • A copy of the activity sheet for each student.

Development

Comparing and Describing the Relationship of Integers

Using the symbols <, >, or = describe the relationship.

For example

  1. Compare Jordin Tootoo’s goals in the 2009-10 season to the number of goals he scored in the playoffs.  Write a mathematical expression that compares the number of goals he scored in the regular season to the number of goals he scored in the playoffs.

         Answer: 6  >  1

Practice

  1. Compare the goals Jordin scored in the 2007/08 season to the number of assists he earned during that same season.

  2. Compare the number of points Jordin earned in the 2004-05 season to the number of earned points in the 2005-06 season.

  3. Compare the number of goals Jordin scored during the 2004-05 season in comparison to the number of assists that Jordin received during that same season.

  4. Compare the number of points earned during Jordin’s last year with the Brandon Wheat Kings to the first year he played for the Nashville Predators.

  5. Compare the total number of goals Jordin scored while playing 4 seasons with Brandon Wheat Kings to the number of gols he scored in his frst 4 seasons with the   Nashville Predators.

  6. Make up your own camparative question. Have another student solve it and give it back to you to see if you agree with the answer.
